English Learning Milestones for 4-5 -Year-Old Children

Your preschooler has so much to tell you and so many words to use! English learning in children aged between three and four years includes a continually growing vocabulary. Your child will also show that he understands the basic rules of grammar.

Here are some English learning milestones to look for.

- Speak in increasingly complex sentences by joining small sentences together using
words like ‘and’ or ‘because’.
- Be able to use long sentences of up to nine words by 5.
- Can listen to details and retell a story
- Recalls part of a story
- Uses future tense
- Tells longer stories
- Says name and address
- Can count ten or more objects
- Correctly names at least four colors
- Better understands the concept of time
- Knows about things used every day in the home (money, food, appliances)
- Sing simple songs in English, use rhymes and made-up words
- Talk about what they’re thinking
- Follow simple directions
- Understand the difference between reality and fantasy
- Understand about consequences and think using logical steps
- Pronounce most of the sounds correctly in their native language and some in English
- Understand abstract ideas related to size or time
- Ask about words they don’t understand or haven’t heard before in both languages
- Draw basic shapes and write some letters
- Identify more sounds and letters in English. They will be able to recognize rhymes while singing songs in English.
