How to teach your kids English at home?

1. Set a routine

Regular practice is best for learning a language, so if you can, try to learn ‘a little and often’.

Establish a routine for your English time at home. It is better to have short, frequent sessions than long, infrequent ones. Fifteen to thirty minutes is enough for very young children.

Try adding English into your normal, everyday routines. There are so many opportunities to practise language naturally in real situations around your home. For example, you could practise clothes vocabulary when you are getting dressed. You could practise food and drink vocabulary when you are cooking, eating and making shopping lists.

2. Play games

Children learn naturally when they are having fun. Games are a fun way to practise English – it can be a really motivating way to learn a language.

You can find many different games on a wide range of topics on eKids such as Memory, Running, Word Connection….

3. Use stories

Younger children love books with bright colours and attractive illustrations. It’s a powerful and motivating way for children to learn language.

The animated stories on eKids are an excellent way for children to develop listening and reading skills. Stories on eKids help children to :

  • learn vocabulary
  • learn how words can be put together to make sentences and texts
  • learn sounds, rhythm and intonation (especially where there are lots of rhyming sounds)
  • use their imagination and thinking skills to ‘work out’ meaning and predict what happens next
  • develop their understanding of the world, life experiences, relationships and feelings.

4. Use songs

Songs are a great source of ‘real-life’ language and you can use music to practise lots of different language skills. Most of all, songs are a fun way to learn English!

There are many fun, animated songs on eKids which you can listen to with your children. Songs in eKids are:

eKids cung cấp các bài hát sinh động dưới dạng hoạt hình mà bố mẹ có thể nghe cùng con. Các bài hát trong eKids:

  • not too long (1–3 minutes)
  • not too fast (easy to sing along)
  • in everyday English (not too many new or difficult words)
  • clear (you can easily hear all the words).

5. Teach grammar

With younger children, there is no need to explicitly teach grammar rules, but instead get them used to hearing and using different grammatical structures in context, for example ‘have got’ when you are talking about someone’s appearance, or ‘must/mustn’t’ when talking about their school rules. Hearing the grammar being used in context from an early age will help your child to use it naturally and correctly when they are older.

You can use the grammar rules and practice sections on eKids. Videos, quizzes and games help kids to learn in a fun, relaxed way.
